The Department of Ophthalmology offers a full range of medical and surgical treatment services for all visual impairments and traumatic eye injuries. Approximately 2000 ophthalmic surgical procedures are performed each year in our independent and well-equipped operating room. The Department of Ophthalmology is also a leading training center for future ophthalmologists.

SURGICAL SERVICES:

Small incision phacoemulsification of cataract with foldable posterior chamber IOL implantation.
Extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE).
Cryoextraction of cataract.
Secondary implantation of scleral-fixated posterior chamber intraocular lenses in aphakia.
Glaucoma filtration surgery (trabeculectomy).
Augmented trabeculectomy with antiproliferative adjunctive agents (MMC).
Glaucoma surgery using aqueous drainage implants (Ahmed valve implantation).
Ex-Press Glaucoma Filtration Device implantation under a partial thickness scleral flap.
Anterior segment cryotherapy.
Combined cataract and glaucoma filtration surgery procedure (Phacotrabeculectomy)
Squint surgery in adults.
Plastic surgery and reconstruction of conjunctival sac.
Oculoplastic eyelid surgery: blepharoplasty, ptosis repair for droopy eyelid, ectropion repair, entropion repair, tarsorraphy.
Surgery involving the lacrimal apparatus: canalicular trauma repair, dacryocystorhinostomy.
Orbital reconstructions.
Excision of malignant lid and conjunctival lesions with histological confirmation.
Nasolacrimal duct probing in congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
Intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents in age related macular degeneration (AMD), cystoid macular edema, secondary choroidal neovascular membrane.

Posterior segment evaluation:

Spectral Domain OCT,
Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA),

Cataract surgery qualification:

anterior segment evaluation,
ultrabiomicroscopy (UBM),
complete optical biometry using low coherence reflectometry technique with Lenstar 900,
ultrasound biometry (including immersion technique),
corneal specular microscopy.

Glaucoma surgery qualification:

Tonometry,
Gonioscopy,
Corneal pachymetry,
Visual field testing.

AMO WHITESTAR Signature® PRO Phacoemulsification System.
Leica -TrueVision 3D Visualization System Ophthalmology- surgical microscope.

INTRODUCTION TO A HOSPITAL:

The inpatients in a hospital are admitted in one two main ways:

Through eye casualty unit at Accident and Emergency Department when emergency treatment is needed for the eyes. These can include:

chemical injury ,
sudden loss of vision within the last four to six hours,
sudden onset of painful red eye,
traumatic eye injuries.

Through waiting list for admission as in the case of cataract
